What an ice dam is, and why it is a warning sign
An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts the snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezes at the colder eave. The ice backs water up under the shingles and into the house.
Removing the dam stops the immediate leak. The lasting fix is usually less heat reaching the roof deck: air sealing, insulation and ventilation. We can look at the roof and tell you what we see.
